  1. I would argue that rowing is a more complete cardio workout. In swimming, depending on the stroke, its mostly upper body. You use your legs a lot but not nearly enough to become stronger in that region.

Rowing is a primarily lower body workout, however your arms are constantly engaged, much more so then your legs are in swimming.

To start either sport, the best thing to do would be to join a club or go to a membership gym where a trainer can teach you how to row/swim so you don't end up getting injured.

  2. Yes, swimming is the best cardio workout of all sports. This is because you are basically using every muscle in your body.

My advice is to start swimming on a swim team. This way you are working out and making sure you aren't hurting yourself in the proccess. I'm saying this because many people on my swim team are very good, but they have a bad stroke. After having a bad stroke with a continuous workout, they have developed tendonitis. This also has to do with overuse, so you want to make sure that you join a swim team that doesn't over work you in the beginning.

Anyway, I would say depending on the level you are at in swimming, the time should vary.

    Good Luck! =]

  3. Well, it's an all-body workout and doesn't place any strain on ANY part of the body, so I guess the answer to your question is Yes.

Learn how to swim, by learning arm/leg movements (no doggy paddling). Or if you have a shallow pool (around 4ft), you can try running or walking in the water while lifting water weights. Oh how I miss water aerobics!
