Question:

Is taking an acidophillous supplement healthy?

I frequently have digestive problems like upset stomach and mild diarrhea mainly from stress and an anxiety disorder. I have been told that taking an acidophillous supplement can help with the bacteria levels in my digestive tract. Does anyone know of any health risks/cautions I should know before taking it?

  1. Just eat natural live yoghurt. It has L acidiphillous AND  bifidobacterium and S thermophilous. It tastes nice too.

  2. It's a very beneficial supplement.  I use Optiflora which is a two-product system which includes Probiotic (Bifidus & Acidophilus...microflora) + Prebiotic (FOS...food source for microflora).  This product is different in that it has a patented encapsulation process which guarantees the delivery of 500 million live bacteria to the intestines.  Other products only guarantee live bacteria at the time of manufacture.

  3. To the best of my knowledge, there are none.  Acidophilus and other probiotic supplements are amongst the safest supplements there are in existence.

  4. I get a multi strain probiotic that I get from the Vitamin Shoppe. (it's a chain). It's called Advanced Multi-Billion Dophilus. It has 4 different digestive bacteria. I use it every day. If I run out, I feel it right away.

I also use Digestive Enzymes. They help with the GI upset.
