Question:

Is taking from a lost and found stealing?

I realize that organizations who have "lost and founds" have to sometimes empty the contents by donating/selling etc. I don't have a problem with that, as long as their policy is posted, and any auction is announced, giving people a chance to check the lost and found for items that belong to them.

BUT, if an individual rummages lost and founds for the sole purpose of selling the items, do you consider that stealing?

  1. nawww.

  2. If you are taking it the first day that it was found and put into lost and found, then yes. It probably wouldn't be stealing if you were going to take it at the end of the day that they would donate/sell it.

That's what I'm doing at least. I went to the janitors of my school, and they said that in two weeks, anything that is still there is mine to keep if I want it. That isn't stealing in my opinion, since it wasn't going to end up with the original owner anyway, especially since they said that they were going to get rid of everything anyway.

  3. yes- it is stealing since it isn't yours and hasn't been authorized. IF however the place who has the lost and found authorizes you to do so, it's ok then.
