  1. Every sensor on your engine is used to mix the right amount of fuel and oxygen to get the best performance and mileage.  If your O2 sensor is reading high or low the computer will make the mixture too little fuel (lean mixture) which makes your car feel like an 80 year old who has smoked for 60 years; or too much fuel (rich mixture) which is like eating a 36 ounce steak and running a marathon.  The temperature sensor, MAP sensor, MAF sensor, and throttle position sensor operate on similar principles.  If it is only reading slightly off your car may seem to run fine but you are not getting the mileage you should and you are damaging the other components like the spark plugs or catalytic converter.  Fix it before it gets expensive.  Good luck.

  2. Absolutely. The O2 sensor is a gadget that measures the amount of Oxygen in your exhaust. It'll tell the computer to increase or decrease the fuel/air mixture.

If it's not working right, it'll send false info to the car's control module.. The module can then keep dumping too MUCH fuel into the mix. Another deal would be performance. It can lag/stall/quit from time to time,

  3. Yes the  o2 sensor is the cars nose it smells the air to fuel mixture, and tells the engine if fuel is being excessively burned

  4. Depends, some engines already have them.

  5. Only if you are replacing an O2 sensor that has failed, which will cause the Check Engine Light to illuminate on your dash.
