I heard some people says that on 27/8, Mars will looks as big as the Moon and we can see it w/ our naked eyes. What's that exact time? Is it a hoax? And is there any websites that have predictions of upcoming scientific events like eclipse...etc?

  1. oh god, we have to deal with another month of this!?

this email goes around every year.

  2. NO.  This is an old hoax that comes around every few years.  Mars won't even look any brighter to the casual observer.  It's just a bit closer, so if you took careful measurements of the luminosity, you'd see it increase a bit, but that's it.  It's going to look like another star still.

  3. hehe, no...big hoax

  4. No.  This is one of those annoying internet hoaxes that keeps coming back every year about this time since it was first started in 2003.

In 2003, Mars came into its closest opposition with the Earth in something like 60,000 years. and will not be as close again for another 60,000 years.  Did you see two moons on August 27, 2003?  No.

Mars WAS particularly bright that day, but it was still just a tiny object, nowhere near as large as the Moon.  I still used my telescope to observe it, and in the telescope is was but a small dot.  And why?  Because it was still ~35 million miles away!  Mars never left its orbit, nor did the Earth, so it was impossible for it to cover the same angular dimensions as the Moon, thus it could not possibly look as large as the Moon.

So relax.  If Mars ever got close enough to appear as large as the Moon, it would be a gravitational disaster for the Earth.  But the force required to knock Mars out of orbit would more likely destroy the planet.

  5. This is from a hoax e-mail which crops up every year. See http://www.hoax-slayer.com/hsblog/2007/0...

OK guys, he's gone. No doubt he'll return under another name.

  6. It's bogus.

  7. no its not real. where did you hear this? mars is much farther away than the moon and for it to be as big as the moon it would have to be just as close as the moon. its probably the moon is going to be redish like mars or something or mars will be able to be viewed close to the moon as a small dot.

  8. The Mars/Moon hoax has been circulating for several years, with the date changing to keep it convincing.

Here is an example of the response to it in 2006 (first link.) and 2007 (second link.)

The last two links will give you all you want and more re upcoming events.

  9. AHHHH thats my bday! how sweet! =) lol

oh sorry..i dont know...i just got excited when I saw my birthday..heh

  10. i don't think that it will be close as the moon and as big as the moon because nasa sepnt years thinking how they can have enough fuel to send there rover  on mars and so if this is true they would of watied a coupel of months and send  it then :)

  11. NO THAT IS NOT TRUE. IT IS A HOAX. THIS HAS BEEN ASKED YEAR AFTER YEAR. IF MARS DID LOOK LIKE THE SIZE OF THE MOON THERE WOULD BE BIG PROBLEMS.

yes I did need to yell.

  12. "Since the moon is the closest body in space to our planet earth, there is NEVER going to be another object as big as the moon" -TP

Actually, the sun sometimes appears larger in the sky than the moon. This is why we have annular solar eclipses sometimes instead of total solar eclipses, because the moon is not quite large enough to block out the soon. This is because the distance between the moon and earth changes, as does the distance between the earth and sun.

"An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. Hence the Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the outline of the Moon."

  13. Not true. Mars will never, ever get that close to Earth.

  14. Since the moon is the closest body in space to our planet earth, there is NEVER going to be another object as big as the moon. Mars will never be that close to appear that big. There are some times where u can see it with your naked eye, but it will only be a little bigger than a star in the sky.

and Trey: the date on your link said Aug. 27th of *2003*

  15. it is not bogus..check out this site http://www.scienceinafrica.co.za/2003/se...

  16. august 27 2003!

    that was 5 years ago!

and it wasnt all that bright...

take a look at where the Earth and Mars will be this Aug 27.

    http://astro.u-strasbg.fr/~koppen/orbitv...

you can see, when you roll it ahead to Aug 27 that Mars and Earth are nearly as FAR APART as they ever get.  (okay, Mars will be at 5:00 and the Earth at 12:00)

old hoaxes never die, they just find new gullible people to believe in them
