I'm thinking of buying a slightly used (4-cylinder) 2008 Dodge Avenger. I'm 18 years old and I need a new car to commute back forth to college, which I am starting in 2 weeks. Is the Dodge Avenger a reliable car that will last me a while? I really like the sporty look of it, but I'm not sure how reliable it is.

  1. Just about every auto maker has a better car in that category. Honda, Nissan, Chevrolet, Toyota, even Hyundai and Ford make better cars...Just stay away from Dodge completely

  2. so far those seem to be pretty good vehicles to own,my aunt bought one and i tried to talk her out of it because i thought it might give problems but so far this has been a pretty good vehicle for her, she,s had the typical trips back to the dealer for small things but nothing major yet, hers has made several trips back to michigan and hasn't ever caused any problems yet, good luck.

  3. I've been going to the same mechanic for many years, and he swears by Toyota, Honda and Subaru.....in that order.  Chevy Prism is actually a Toyota with their name, so that would be a good bet too.

In general, Toyotas have a much better record for not having mechanical problems.  I have a Toyota with 215,000 miles, and it runs perfectly (although I use preventative maintenance to keep it that way).  Any car will do well if it was taken care of, and if you take care of it.  Be sure to change the oil and have the other recommended maintenance done.  Even a Toyota will fall apart prematurely if it is not taken care of.

Assuming you have a limited, student budget, go for reliability more than style.  For example, Mitsubishi (in my opinion) makes some cars that look hot, but their record reliability is poor and their need for mechanical repair is high.

  4. Dads Old Dogged Gas Eater has never been related to reliable.  I think the old 90's Avenger's were decent looking, the new ones are ugly.  Someone at my office rented one this week, 1st time I got to see this new model up close.  I'd stick with an Asian car for price/reliability/mpg's.  A Hyundai Elantra would be great for someone like yourself or a Mazda 3/Honda Civic.

  5. I was in the market for a new car last year and narrowed down my choices to 3 cars.  07 Dodge Avenger, 07 Subaru Impreza, or 07 Scion TC.  After looking at all of the stats and seeing each one in person, I picked the Subaru.  You can get an Impreza for about the same price and much more reliable because the Avenger is so young in its production.
