Generally, when referring to 8th or 9th century. unless specified as BC it is "assumed" to be AD or in the common era. The only exception I can think of is in a study of ancient history, when the entire frame of reference is "presumed" to be BC.

You need to be more specific. We refer to both dates--8th and 9th centuries CE (or AD) and 8th and 9th centuries BCE (before common era; BC).
