Question:

Is the Border Patrol a good job for women, what about family moms?

I just found out that I passed the initial exam and have yet to be contacted about future ones. So far so good. However, immediately I began thinking about my three kids and especially the little one who is two. I know that I will have to leave them if I go to the academy. What are the benefits for women and are they at all lenient with family women? I don't expect any special treatment, but traditionally speaking, are they flexible with moms as far as having to take any time off for family, or preventing any transfers?

  1. I would consider the danger it might incur on yourself and your family. I know many that have died because of the craziness on the border. I suggest maybne writing a list of pros and cons and consult with your own family and children and see how they might feel. Once done, you will get a clearer idea as to what you might want to do.

And I do make this comment in geneneral, not because you are a woman. This career is a dangerous option for both men and women of ANY age group.

  2. The United States Border Patrol is a great organization, but you won't be given any special treatment. Everyone has right to special requests and it really depends on what you're requesting.

Your best bet is to contact the recruitment office.

  3. To begin, no, you will not receive any special treatment.  Each agent requests days off duty and annual leave.  Those requests are granted based upon available manpower, special circumstances and seniority.  A senior agent can be denied days off duty in favor of a junior agent on limited occasion if the situation warrants it.  Annual leave is strictly seniority based (seniority = time in service as compared to other agents in the patrol group.)

There are leave programs for various circumstances beyond annual leave.  Family Friendly Leave Act (FFL) allows for up to 13 days per year to be use for taking care of family and is paid out of the employees sick leave account.  Family Medical Leave Act allows an employee to be away from work in a non-paid status for support of family once FFL is exhausted.

In all, it is not easy.  However, you will not be the first parent serving in the Border Patrol.  You will find there are also several single parents in your station that may be able to assist you (if you are a single parent).

Transfers are based upon the Voluntary Relocation Program or the Compassionate Transfer Program.  Neither are available to probationary intern agents.  After probation, you can apply for reassignment through the Voluntary Relocation Program and will compete for a station based upon the seniority of all applicants.  Gaining a transfer through the Compassionate Transfer Program will require submitting a request that is reviewed by a panel and subject to review of listed conditions by a subject matter expert prior to being referred to the panel.  (For example, a doctor may serve as a subject matter expert if your reasons are medical.)
