I get its the person taking the photo and the lenses that can create good shots. But from other peoples experience, is the Canon 40d an overall excellent camera to use on weddings and that, where a high end camera would be usually used and recommended?

  1. Yes, it's an excellent choice given the qualifiers you've already mentioned.

  2. Any good dSLR will do the job (and the 40D is a very good camera). What's really important though, are the lenses you are using. For a wedding, you may want to invest in a good prime lens or two, a wide angle lens and a fast (f/2.8 or faster) tele lens, flash, etc.

p.s. the 50D has just been announced (15MP, Digic 4 processor, etc.)...so expect the price of the 40D to fall after it's released.

  3. Yes it is a great choice for wedding photography. Many professional wedding photographers including myself use either a 30D or a 40D. Where we differ from the average amateur is that we know how to use it very well (most anyways) and have a substantial investment in lenses flashes and other accessories. I suspect within the next few years most pros will be moving on to the full frame cameras but until recently they were prohibitively expensive. I know my next camera will be full frame.

If you have the knowledge, good lenses and other equipment it is a very good camera for this type of work. There really isn't much difference functionally over the cheaper Rebel cameras. The main reason pros use these is that they are better built and made for the amount of use a professional will put them through. They use the same sensor and image processors as the Rebel cameras do so there will be no difference in image quality if you use the same lenses.

  4. yes, it's a good camera for weddings and such if you can't afford full frame

with that said, wait for the soon to be released 50d and wait until the price falls and levels off, if you can wait.

Take the $$ saved and get some good lenses. In the end, lenses will help improve the image quality in terms of sharpness and color. Composition will be up to you.
