Is the Canon EOS 450D compatible with L-Series lenses?

Hi guys, quick question, I'm planning to get a Canon 450D with a lense 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM, I'm a newbie so I don't master all the information/ guidelines and all of that. Was just wondering if the Canon EOS 450D is compatible with L-Series lenses like the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM? Any downsides? Thanks a lot guys.

  1. Of course, an L lens is compatible. However, I really don't see the sense in buying a 17-85mm lens AND the 24-70mm lens...because their focal lengths are too similar to one another. Your focal range would be too limited if you have just these two lenses.

The EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens is an excellent lens. However it's main downside is that it's large and heavy (950g). That's exactly double the weight of the light-weight, 450D.

If you weren't getting the EF 17-85mm f/4-5.6...I would suggest you get the excellent (but much dearer), EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens (weight, 645g).

For wide angle, look at the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM.

If you really want an L tele-photo lens (and you like white), you could consider the excellent (and very affordable) EF 70-200 f/4 L IS. It 'only' weighs 760g compared to the much more expensive, f2/8 IS version (which weighs in at 1570g).

So, when considering a lens, you really need to determine which focal length/s you will be using the most, how good the actual lens is, how much it costs and even how much it weighs.

The links below give you an idea of how good/bad various Canon lenses perform...

    good luck

  2. Yes it will fit.

All canon lenses have the same mount on a Canon camera.

But as a newbee I really do NOT reccomend you to buy ROFESSIONAL lenses.

Thay are Way to expensive and you will not need them, if you do not plan to buy a pro body such as the 5D /1D mkIII

    BUT:

For example: I have the 400D  small size frame sensor (1.6x  to fullsize frame sensor)

And I have the 24-70 F/2.8 L USM lens from canon. ($2200 just for a lens)

    Fits!

And I have the 5D pro body, same lens lens fits. (made for it)

    On the 400D the 24-70 L lens is 35-112mm

On the 5D the 24-70 L lens is 24-70 mm

    (24 x 1.6 = 35 mm ish and the 70 x 1.6 = 112 mm

if you have a EF lens (for APS-C sensors (the 350D-400D-450 D) the values will stay the same.

For the L series (FULL SIZE FRAME SENSOR lenses) you will have to multiply the mm on the L lens times 1.6. )

So because the 450 is a small size sensor (APS-C) you have to miltiply the mm on the L lens with 1.6 to get the values for your small size sensor.

If you plan to buy a PRO body soon 5D buy the L lenses. Like I did.

If you think you will stick to your 450D then buy the lenses with a GOLDEN BAND.

**Silver band = USELESS POXY CHEAP PLASTIC **** (like the kitlenses)

** GOLDEN BAND is very allright

** red band is PRO lenses (way to expensive)
