I was reading somewhere that OFFICIALLY The City of London is not in London and that it not one of the 32 London Boroughs. Is that right?

  1. I think that what people mean is that, historically, the bit that is called "The City" (a small bit in central London) had a lot of autonomy. Think of it as the original "London" from medieval times, when many places where still not built on, and travel took much longer and so places like Westminster, and other parts of what we today see as "central" London, where merely villages "near" London.

The "City" was powerful, because the merchants and tradespeople there where wealthy and/or well-organised. So they got a lot of privileges from the Crown - often in exchange for giving or lending huge sums of money to the Crown, e.g. for war efforts. As it so often happens with traditional English law, some of these privileges might still exist today, so that certain curiosities or paradox might occur, such as the Greater London Authority not being in charge inside the "City" concerning certain affairs, etc. - but I don't know anything about that.

But I do know that there are privileges relating to the office of the mayor of the "City", the "Lord Mayor of London", which is a post different from that of London mayor (Boris Johnson).

Look up the subject under the links below - I have no time right now to read them myself.

  2. The City of London is at the core of Greater London. It is historically the centre of London though it does not form one of the Metropolitan boroughs. (Oops, just learnt something new myself!...edit)

I think it has the least amount of residents of any London borough, because it is mostly corporate business with a smattering of upmarket flats.

You can read in great detail on Wikipedia

  3. I really don't know what you are talking about.  London is a CITY, located in the United Kingdom or specifically Great Britain which is a COUNTRY.  So London is a city in Great Britain.
