Question:

Is the EU anti-British?

I admit to not knowing a lot about the intricacies of the EU, and possibly i have been overtly influenced by the press, but it seems a number of their policies have had a damaging effect on the British economy, whilst benefiting others- fishing quotas, CAP etc. in addition, i was told that along with Germany we pay the most in (fair enough as the two largest economies), but we get very little back

How far is this true?

+ What are the benefits of the EU?

  1. A Federal Europe, by definition, is anti all the former Nation States that would be subsumed within the it.

  2. The only benefit is to politicians so that they can learn from one another, on how best to fleece the public, and keep their gravy trains going. 90 percent of our laws are now made by unelected officials, and they have the audacity to complain about Mugabe.

  3. It costs us fortune morally, culturally and financially,  we have been betrayed by self seeking politicians

  4. The English are a nation of serial whingers. If the UK was getting the best deal in the EU; they would still whinge about it.

Let us put the anti EU question to bed. The UK do 55% of their trade with the EU; if we were to leave we would never be able to afford the tariffs that they would put on us.

Let us worry more about how good of a deal that we can achieve within; instead of trying to jump ship at any misdemeanour!!!

  5. no benefits, they are very anti UK, we are to be dismantled

is just the kind of traitor that has destroyed this nation. i am lleaving the UK soon , the rest of you can have the likes of him

  6. The EU is a completely undemocratic institution. MEPs are totally powerless and have no executive powers.

They do not vote on legislation or propose it. The legislation is framed by the commissioners, who are appointed by each country, then passed by the council of ministers.

The MEPs can refer legislation back to the commissioners but they do not have to pay any attention to it. The MEPs are toothless.

The CAP is massively  beneficial to French farmers who are very inefficient largely down to their inheritance laws where a farm will be split evenly between all the children when the owner dies. This tends to progressively make farms smaller where everywhere else farms are getting larger to provide economies of scale.

There is unfortunately a lot of ignorance about the EU from people like Native C. If he cares to check the per capita Gross Domestic Product of all the European nations he will discover that the two strongest economies by a mile are Switzerland and Norway who are both members of the European Free Trade Area by who both chose not to become members of the EU.

If you look at the Balance of trade figures we import £13.6 billion more than we export to the EU countries. We are far more important to them than they are to us.

The suggestion that we would lose out by withdrawing from the EU is a total myth.

With the free labour market within the EU membership has been beneficial to business to the detriment of everyone else because it has depressed wages by about 11%.

Britain has gained nothing from it's EU membership and as more and more poorer countries become members the costs to us will increase dramatically.

If you believe that the rich should subsidise the poor then the EU is a great institution. Problem of course is that even the poorest person in this country is rich in comparison to people in eastern Europe. Of course the cost of living is much higher here. The average cost of a three bed semi here would buy you a mansion in Bulgaria or Turkey.

If you believe that each country should look after it's own first then you must vote UKIP and make it happen.

If you don't Britain as such will cease to exist having no more power than an American state. All our major laws will be set by the unelected European authorities.

The EU is largely socialist, and we are talking old labour not new labour here so it will not matter who we vote for soon as the UK government will soon have virtually no power anyway.

We will have a common defence policy, a common foreign policy, a president and a common currency.

The EU is dedicated to becoming the federal states of Europe which will mean one government for all the member countries.

When the institution is already so fraught with bribery and corruption that the auditors have refused to sign off the accounts on even a single occasion , you have to ask whether it is an institution that we want to be part of.

I suggest you actually read the Treaty of Lisbon, something few of our own MPs have even done. Believe me it is more frightening than any Steven King novel!

  7. they are anti-American, that's for sure.

  8. Yes it is.

  9. Being a member of the EU is a bit like having a gym membership :)

If you don't use it, then you don't have the right to complain about it.

By that I mean that the UK should take an active role in the EU, instead of sitting on the sideline while the other EU memberstates are forging ahead.

  10. Stuff the eu.

  11. Heath sold out lots of British rights in order to get us in to the EU (then EEC) against French wishes. However, i don't think the EU i sparticularly anti-GB but it does tend to steamroller unique elements of cultures, not just ours.

The benefits primarily go to business and the working man/woman in particular could feel hard done by. cheaper EU labour puts pressure on their labour and ultimately their job. profit does not go to society but to shareholders and fat cats.

  12. Not especially. It's just anti-democracy. Read the other answers.

  13. there are little or no benifits for uk in being in the eu what with the decimation of the british fishing fleet to the benifit of the french irish and spanish fleets ALL subsidised by their respective goverments , not only that the french and spanish enjoy benificial fuel deals fron highland council to the detriment of scottish fishermen , oh yes if it was on the other way they the frogs and diegos would be up in arms calling discrimination . as for EU there is no basis for it to be legal and should be disbanded , the fact of the matter is the people of uk vated back in the 60s or early 70s to be part of eec, well the announced result declared that apart from the western isles of scotland was in favour of joining however i did a personal survey of my own in aberdeenshire and out of more than 2,000  only one person declared that they voted in favour of joining . I firmly believe that govt of the time manipulated the figures or more likely LIED to the people

  14. The UK is a nett contributor to the EU.

We should get the h**l out of it as quickly as possible.

  15. Yes. For a fuller answer read the Book Look to our moat by Louis Le Baillie. isbn number 142514726-7.

When asked if he wanted the UK in the EU Mr Mitterrand said "Yes but I want her in naked."

They are doing a good job of fulfilling what he wanted.
