Do you think the EU is heading towards a federal state and would this be a good thing or a bad thing?

  1. If you are a European then you are obviously not old enough to remember how the EU was originally sold to the European people as an answer to the U.S. and how the EU would become the "United States of Europe"

  2. Kinda.

The EU has many simiularities to the USSA but also great differences. Although the EU has a single currencies they still have several markets that effects the value of the Euro, England decided to maintain the pound over the EU. Each countries has its own independent government and the EU government is finding it way through this maze and presently has little impact or influence in matters of governement.

But the desire is for the rormation of a powerful European Union that would be greater than the smaller independent nations of Europe. A Europe that can equal the influence of USA, Russia, China.

  3. No.  There are those in the EU who would love this to happen, but there are too many differences between the people of Europe to allow this to happen.

The Dutch hate the Germans, the Belgians hate the Dutch, the British hate the Germans and of course, everyone hates the French.  And now with EU expansion, there are even more nationalities to not get on.

In additon, there are too many different systems.  For example, the German health care system is one of the best in the world, but wastes too much money (though not as much as the US system does).  The UK system is more efficient, but while very good, is not as good as that seen in Germany.  Merging these different systems in healthcare alone would cause too many problems.

So no, the EU is not going to become an United States of Europe.

  4. More or Less, they want to be a united block against the americans, russians and the chinesse. however, if the americans asked really nice, we would probley let those chaps in provided the had an attitute adjustment and gave us lots of new weapons to play with, yea!!

  5. Probably.

Difficulties include many languages and traditions.  Desire by UK, France and Germany to dominate the union.  Very successful economic models in form Soviet dominates countries that is pretty far from the socialist models in western Europe.  Work ethic is stronger in UK and eastern Europe than in most of western/southern Europe.

Notwithstanding, it is likely that time will bring this union closer until eventually it functions as a single economic entity.  Politics and government will take longer.
