Is the Excelsior District safe to live in?

Question

I am a single Irish lad moving to San Francisco and have found a nice place in the Excelsior District, 4 blocks to a bus stop or 15 minute walk to the BART. Is this a safe area of the city to live in? Is it close to anything interesting, or how long does it take to get to the center of San Francisco? I'll only be there for 6 weeks. I work from home but of course I'll be going out at weekends. Thanks :)
