Is the Xserve a type of external hard-drive, because if it is that would be great.

  1. No, it's a much more powerful and demanding server than a normal one.

  2. The Xserve is not; it is a full server, with up to four hard drives inside. You might be referring to the Xserve RAID array, which is an array of up to 14 network-attached hard drives which can be accessed through an Xserve or through a network.     Note: They have discontinued production of the Xserve RAID, but you might still find them available secondhand.
