Question:

Is the Footy Show in its death throes?

I can no longer watch a whole program. What is it supposed to be now? Humourous? Topical? Insightful? The serious sections are just becoming stupid, the funny sections are now hardly risible. Trevor Marmalade? Does he have shares in the company, because he adds less than nothing. No-one knows what to do with Sam. They can't keep him, but they can't get rid of him. Despite being "on the inside" Bradshaw and Lyons provide no valuable insight into what their clubs are up to. And all the panellists do is recite who is in, who's out and usually a less than insightful reason as to who might win. And in between they just provide lots of coverage for their sponsors. Is this the Footy Show or a Foxtel ad?

Has this old dog had its day? Is it time to put it down?

  1. I think also that some of the players that sit on the panel have become hesitant over time to say anything informative or controversial, perhaps in fear of fines or discipline from their clubs and/or the AFL. Personally, I watch the show to watch the players. In saying that, there is certain "stars" that have no media ability and that they should give up on. I prefer the show when the players themselves are firing, and you will find that when this is the case there will be less Sam.

  2. Only like for the past 5 years. Another programme for the footy wankers to get off on. Moronic commentary suitable only for the schoolyard. Blatantly sexist and racist content to challenge community decency. People with any sense of reality have given the show away. Like any shock/horror programme, it becomes boring in time and must be replaced after it has been milked for too long. A problem is - where will Sam turn up next time. Perhaps the Goodies?

  3. Yeah, it doesn't make good television. I think the guest panelists would be alot more comfortable without Sam. He is getting older and more bitter and senile by the year. You get the feeling the AFL and the players aren't really fans of the show. It might sound outrageous to get rid of Sam, but it's probably the lifeline the show needs.

Personally I prefer the NRL Footy Show (I support both codes). It is mostly cheap laughs but the show has the patronage of both the players and the NRL. As a result they get loads of insightful interviews. You feel as though players want to be there and it has made itself an important part of the NRL community. Players enjoy contributing to it instead of showing up and getting the p**s taken out of them by some old legend of the game.

  4. It used to be compulsary viewing each Thurs nite, now it is just another show, I never thought I'd say it but...bring back Eddie!!! Lyon and Brayshaw are 2 grinning, hand rubbing buffoons, they would be more suited to hosting Better Homes and Gardens.

  5. I watched it while Billy Brownless took over from Sam and quite enjoyed it, but as soon as Sam came back the entire feel of the show changed again, so I now give it a big miss again. I find the best footy show on TV is Before The Game - at least the players look like they enjoy being a part of it, and the humour stays (mostly) above the waist.

  6. You make many good points, all have merit.

i guess i only watch it out of habit, i have always watched it, trevor is rubbish, his jokes are rubbish too.

might be time to close it down i think or rehash the whole show. it is not working at present.

  7. I am with you. A few years ago I threw in watching it at all and now I feel myself heading in the same direction again. Not only am I annoyed with all of the things that you have pointed out but also I find that it has become the Geelong, Kangaroos and Melbourne show with very little time for any other club! I also find that I am really "over" most of Sams "jokes" and that Trevor stumbles and stutters over his like someone who has got a mental disability!

How they won a logie this year is beyond me!

  8. I think it needs to start at 8:30PM, then it has to cut the s**t and it may have people watching it the end rather than going to bed after street talk like a lot of people tend to do.

  9. yea it has lost intensity since sam got told off........i really think that if you want to watch the footy show you have to have a sense of humour and know that not everything that is presented on their is "taken seriously".

i really believe that "if you don't like the footy show or sam newman...............DON"T WATCH IT IN THE FIRST PLACE"

  10. Look, it has gone down hill a bit lately, but I still like it. I suppose the only thing I can say is, that if you want a serious footy program, watch Footy Classified or On The Couch! I can see where you're coming from, and for the record, I don't like Marmalade either (too many Collingwood jokes!).

  11. Time for it to go the way of Old Yeller.

  12. the footy show do not talk much about football any more

i think it has become a variety show instead.

  13. It's the best show.

I watch it every week and love it except for Hutchy.

    Long live the footy show!
