  1. Yes it is over. Toshiba is expected to make the official announcement in about 10 minutes, 5PM Tokoyo time.

*Edit* Here it is straight from Toshiba

TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

  2. Unfortunately for me (HD-DVD early adopter), I believe it is over.  I expect Toshiba to drop HD-DVD this week.

PS3 is what created the customer base for Blu-ray.  Instant injection of movie hardware into millions of homes.  HD-DVD supporters had to purchase a stand alone Toshiba HD-DVD player.  Microsoft developed an HD drive for the XBox much too late.

HD-DVD and Blu-ray are both great formats, but there could be only one (so says the Highlander).

  3. I doubt it. I'm waiting it out. There is a "CD" coming that is blue laser and 256 layers on a single side. I've heard it can hold 5 terabytes. Load that sonofabitch with MP3"s!!!

  4. Technically, no.

Since the DVD forum is still behind HD-DVD, the format is still around.

But, essentially HD-DVD may be considered dead as retailers have, more or less, announced that they will exclusively stock Blu-Ray products only and have a specific timetable for phasing out HD-DVD stock while emphasizing Blu_Ray Disc, including a recent announcement of this kind by Wal-Mart.

As for future disc developments, the one that impresses me most is the HVD system, which may be capable of storing up to 3.9 terabytes on a single data-containing layer. But, the system is still under development, so don't hold your breath quite yet.
