  1. 1/ It was Georgia who attacked Southern Ossetia. It killed 10 Russian peacekeepers and 1400 of civilians (200 are killed by now).   Russia as an official UN's peacekeeper must defend the side that was attacked.

    2. If the USA won't make any stupid moves there will be no WWIII.  It's better for you just to stay out of this.

    3. South Ossetia in worse than Kosova it can choose it's own way. And now they want to be a part of Russia.

P.S. A fact: Stalin wasn't Russian, he was Georgian.

  2. I think the govt of Georgia will collapse and the replacement will go back to supporting Moscow just like they always have. The Shaakavilli Govt is an extreme aberration in Georgia's politics and was never really supported by the majority of the Georgians.

Georgia was a Russian province for about 260 years.

I would expect Armenia and Azerbaijan to announce their stronger ties to Russia very soon, giving Russia a fairly secure overland route to Iran and a secure route for the oil pipelines.

Russia does not resemble Germany here.

USA is the one playing war games.

Russia resembles nothing but Russia and is just doing a bit of housekeeping which they have been neglecting.

Georgia was stupid enough yesterday to declare war on Russia in the velief NATO in the form of USA, Turkey and Israel would come rushing in to save them. I don't think that is in the works.

There is a force of US Marines in Georgia at the moment and you better hope they can avoid being put into battle against the Russians or you might find that WW 3 is on with no way to stop it.

If USA gets this before the UN Security Council like they want they are going to have to explain why over 1,000 Israeli "military advisers" were involved in the attack against civilians and a UN peacekeeping force in Tskhinvali, as well as what involvement the US troops in the country had in all this.

I wonder where those Russian long range high altitude bombers and the submarines are idling at this moment

  3. Even if this conflict calms down this time, it will always be a potential conflict in the future, and yes, could lead to a very big problem.

--If Georgia was in NATO, Russian wouldn't have done what they did.

  4. so you are saying WW3 is gonna happen is 3 years? great point there, smartypants

  5. Well, that's a good question, if this had happened say 5 years from now and Georgia was a NATO member, we'd already be in a third World War. The way I'm interpreting Russia's actions is a move towards more violent nationalism and expansionist policies. We may well be pushed into a second cold war by a Russia which increasingly resembles n**i Germany or Stalinist Russia in tone. The best possible resolution to the Georgia/Russia conflict involves Russia annexing South Ossetia. Worst case it could spark a war that spreads across eastern Europe as former Soviet satellites fear the rise of a new USSR.

    Sross,

    True enough.

    AngryCat,

That's a lovely strawman about Stalin there. South Ossetia is Georgian territory and the agreed upon sequence of events is that the separatists broke the cease-fire. If Russia were acting in a peacekeeping role they wouldn't be pursuing military operations outside South Ossetia. Whether or not South Ossetia wants to join Russia isn't the issue here. South Ossetia is sovereign Georgian territory Russia has no right to unilaterally intervene in an internal Georgian matter like this.
