Is the Golden Compass Movie like the Book ?

cause I'm reading the book and i'd rather watch the movie than read the book. (:

I only finished halfway through the book...I'm not into it as I had hoped to be. I can't relate to Lyra at all since she's a Mary Sue, and the slang annoyed me to no end. But I heard the movie is ten times worse, so the book has to be better.

The movie is a very, very condensed version of the book.  Some of the scenes in the movie are changed, reversed and shortened.  The ending differs, so bear that in mind while watching the movie.

The movie was NOTHING like the book. I mean it had the same plot line and characters and stuff but if you read the book you'll find yourself smashing the movie because it is soo different than what you just read. You have to see the movie and book as two different things in your mind , they dont go hand in hand.
