I was thinking of taking classes at the harvard Extension school in nearby Cambridge MA, as I thought it was part of Harvard- but a friend insists it has NOTHING to do with Harvard- and Harvard Extension school classes and degrees are NOT Harvard classes or degees.

What IS the Harvard Extension Scool? Is it...or is it not Harvard?

  1. Harvard Extension is part of Harvard University. It is a division, so a degree from there is not the same as a degree from Harvard college. It's a Harvard Extension degree.

It's not easy to earn a degree from it however because the classes are at night and you can only fit in a couple each term. If you do well, you can get permission to take a couple of regular daytime classes.

Employers know there is no selection process to get in, anyone can go, so a degree doesn't have the cache one from Harvard College does. It's no different than the thousands of programs for the community offered by colleges everywhere.

  2. Clear ur dout by asking ur school on which degree they are providing.

Also there anr many Harvard University affiliated colleges.

I'm not sure abt school level being affiliated

  3. Hi,

Harvard Extension School IS in fact affiliated with Harvard University, it is one of the 12 degree granting schools at the University. HES is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and Harvard Extension graduates are Harvard alumni or alumnae.

Although some of the courses are open enrollment, anyone wishes to get a degree from Harvard extension has to go through a formal admission process. In order to be considered, one has to complete 3 undergraduate-credit / post grad credit courses and get at least a B in all of them, two essays are also required to be reviewed by the admission committee. Candidates also need to pass the compulsory (and notoriously difficult) expo writing course in order to be considered. Unsuccessful applicants may retake it, but only for once more.

There are lots of outstanding alumni from the Harvard Extension School, including Álvaro Uribe, President or Columbia; Linda Attiyeh, Director at Mckinsey & Company, and many others. (See the links below)
