  1. Hi,

I rode Highway 14 from west of Danang to Dalat on a motorbike in 2003.  Started on the "Trail" at Thanh My.   It was a paved road then - 1 lane each way for the most part.  It was under construction in some places. CAUTION:  I drove into a dusty construction zone and hit a cement block lying in the road.  Dumped the bike, bent the shifter and broke the faring.  Got banged up a bit.  Could have been hit by another vehicle in the dust.

The trip was awesome, took 5 days .  Great photography.  Saw parts of Vietnam that are vastly different from coastal Vietnam - worth the trip.

The Vietnamese along the "Trail" are happy to see travelers.  There weren't a lot of tourist facilities (hotels) in the smaller towns.  But the local restaurants were great.

There are a lot of villages along the "Trail" as well as cities of Kon Tum, Pleiku, Buon Me Thuot and Da Lat.

Been to Vietnam 5 times.  6th trip coming in Oct.

  2. From:  http://www.haivenu-vietnam.com/des-quang...

"There’s no point in visiting the Ho Chi Minh Trail, as there’s nothing to see – the whole point was that it should be as invisible as possible. However, much of the route is being reincarnated as the Truong Son Road, a new highway in the west linking the two major cities designed to alleviate the pressure on Highway 1."

  3. I sometimes wonder about the veracity of the answers on this site.  I spent two weeks in June 05 in Hanoi, Hue, and Saigon with the majority of time enjoyed between Hue and DaNang...

The Ho Chi Minh trail WAS a dirt path during the American War (as the locals call it) 35 years ago.

It was under major construction in 05, to become a paved highway....so, much of it was a mess....HUGE dump trucks, earth movers, etc.   HWY 1 IS the only N/S road in a country that is 1000 miles long and only 60 miles wide in parts, running mostly along the coastal lowlands.  But since EVERYONE in V. seems to own a cyclo, you'll do fine.

  4. no its a donkey single lane  you need a panga to cut your way through in parts, so not advisable on a bike unless you can get it on the back of a pack mule.
