Question:

Is the Hotel de Bourgogne still a theatre in Paris France? i am visting in jan and would love to see it.?

I read about it in Theatre history and would love to see it when i am there in january but i cant find if it is still in operation and if there are tours and such. thank you for any help you can give. also if any one if from france and wants to let me know what eles i should see that would be great. thank you.

  1. Maybe I'm overlooking something but I think the answer is that the building no longer exists.

    From an internet search I find that was built in 1548. My understanding is that only one major building from that period still exists (Hôtel Carnavalet).

    I also note that the company of the Hotel de Bourgogne  merged with  that of the Théâtre du Marais to form the Comédie Française . I know that the building that housed the original Comédie Française was in the 6th arrondissement (it is currently at 2 rue Richelieu) on a street that called "rue de L'Ancienne Comédie" (literally the "street of the former theatre."  That suggests that the even earlier building was abandoned.

    Perhaps someone else can correct me as to my conclusion but it seems the building you are looking for is long gone.

    P.S. Check out the Cafe Procope at 13 Rue de l'Ancienne-Comedie. Built in 1686 and in continuous operation at the same site ever since. When the orignal Comédie Française was operating it was a favorite hangout of the actors and writers from the theater. Voltaire, for example, was known to be a regular there.
