  1. Its tidal near the ocean, and only salty there.  The salt may extend as far up river until the floor of the river is above sea level, and that changes with the tides, but the fresh water keeps coming down.

    Its source is in the mountains and must therefore be fresh.

  4. It can be both. For the most part, it's a fresh water river with it's source in the Adirondack mountains. In it's lower reaches ( New York City) it's salty when the tides are coming in. It's an estuary south of Troy where the original fresh water from further north meets the salt of the Atlantic.
