Question:

Is the Joker really insane?

I was watching a show on the History Channel about the, "Psychology of Batman". A rather fascinating show. Among other things, it stated that experts say the Joker really ISN'T insane saying that to be insane one must realize what they are doing is wrong but cannot help themselves. Now, this is the part I'm finding it hard to remember. They said that he knows what he is doing and enjoys it which would make him NOT insane. I am asking two questions. One: What would classify someone as insane? You may not get the whole clinical world to agree and I would like to hear as many earnest opinions as possible. Two: Would experts diagnose The Joker (if he were real) as insane? Thank you.

  1. Considering that he's been to arkam (ms sorry) asylum many times for his crimes (probably had the defense of insanity.)  I'd say yes with a gee a ya think he's insane?

  2. Being clinkically insane means that he would conform to the clinical explanation dictated by the professional field. Insanity doesn't equate to crazy. Being insane, means that your actions are not sane and driven by lucid action. Being insane pretty much means there is a problem mentally and you aren't responsible for your own actions. The Joker clearly is responsible for his own actions. He forms lucid and often complex chains of logic that even though warped are still sound. He acts and reacts to events with complete control. He doesn't respond to voices or influences in his head. He is totally in control. However, that is not to say he is completely sound. The character is psychotic, which means that even though he is in control of his actions and could stop if he wants to, he doesn't. He doesn't want to stop because it is fun not because he is pushed or influenced.

If I know right from wrong and I choose to rape 18 year girls because I like the power or to spite the people in society who says its wrong, then that doesn't make it insane, that makes it repugnant and regardless of how repugnant the action, it still isn't insane to do it, because I knew right from wrong and made a choice.

  3. Wow, that's just kinda confusing!

but umm i don't think he was really insane

but "the dark knight" was amazing, heath was the best joker :)

    ha, i don't think i helped :)

  4. yes. joker is not insane. inlayman's language, an insane person is someone that cannot comprehend the things that ur telling him or cannot function normally with regards to his environment. i mean like, using a car, etc. i think, the joker is a victim of trauma and depression. just like what he relates about his father, he wasn't able to receive love and proper guidance..... just like common juvenile delinquents.
