for my 17th birthday, i wanted to get a ruger 10/22 and the krinker plinker dress up kit so it looks similar to an AK-47. aparenty the pistol grip and folding stock classify it as an assault rifle, but that same classification states "Any semi automatic centerfire rifle with the capability of a detachable mag with 1 of the following: ....". My point being that it says a centerfire rifle, but a .22LR is a rimfire, so does it not count as an assault rifle? and it woudnt break the AK series ban because its only a dress up kit and has no similar internals to a real AK. but im pretty sure that the dealers dont ship to CA. so whats the deal?

  1. When I checked last year .22s were exceptions to most laws.  You should be safe with the kit.  There are two places that can give you more info: BATFE website and the NRA website.  You can e-mail contacts at both and usually get a concrete answer within a week.

That said I would like to ask you not to get the kit for your rifle.  For your own sake.  Once you turn 18 and buy a real AK-47 you will realize that that the Krinker kit looks homosexual.  To save you some money, time, and unpleasant memories, I ask you not to get that kit.  If you really want to do something cool with your 10/22 – put a heavy barrel on it with a custom fluted pattern, custom paint the stock, get a nice scope, switch out the trigger.

  2. I believe the Krinker Plinker kit is legal in California-except for the high capacity magazine.  However many merchants are willing to substitute a standard magazine in products that are otherwise legal products.  You might encounter some merchants who are reluctant to ship to California because of the threaded barrel, but as a rimfire rifle that is not prohibited.  My suggestion would be to buy directly from the manufacturer, it might cost a little more, but will probably be less hassle.  Just a suggestion since you will be spending so much money on the kit, an old, beater 10/22 will be less expensive and look just as nice once the kit is assembled.
