Is the Liberals new proposal to make petty criminals apologise as stupid as it sounds

They think that criminalising young thugs is not the way to go as they go to prison and learn how to be bigger and better criminals

What do you think

  1. Why apologize? What good will that do anyone?

I agree that when they go to prison they simply learn how to become better criminals. I think they learn a lot of things the hard way, and none of it is good.

Do you have a link or something? I would like to read this before giving a judgment call.

  2. I personally think that this could be a good idea in principle and could work if other systems were to be put in place.

I think that there should be posters put up of local troublemakers and young thugs (all thugs) rather than just concentrate on specific criminals.

We have a system here in the Uk of having a s*x offender register why then can there not be a general offender register because all crime has an effect on the victims, the message that seems to be getting sent out is it is not ok to be a s*x offender but it is ok and acceptable to commit other crimes because no-one will know about it.

Discrimination is wrong in all circumstances and why chose to select one group of criminals.

All offenders should be named and shamed.

  3. Let me guess.

The Liberals view petty criminals as something akin to "The League of Gentlemen" where making them apologise to their victims makes them see the error of their ways and turns them into good samaritans.

And how many Hollywood tear jerkers did they have to watch to come up with this one.

In real life there's only one answer to the problem - lock the feckers up and feed them a diet of 12 hours hard labour every day. They won't want a second helping.

  4. No, prison is ******* expensive (£100,000 a year for young offenders, 4 times the cost of Eton), if they go to prison they will learn to be desensitised, and giving an apology would be very humiliating (i.e. having to face your victim)

  5. I spent time in a YOI and if you want to learn new criminal tricks, there's a lot to learn. Having said that, who would take advice from people who got caught?

It's a foolish idea to make them apologise. Doing under forced circumstances means they probably don't mean it.

  6. I agree with the second proposition.  Bring back thick-ears, they're cheap and effective.

  7. I am a liberal but I have a fairly draconian view.  Prison should be for those awaiting trail and those awaiting execution.  Execution should be handled fast.  One automatic appeal that should occur within 90 days and if the appeal fails execution immediately after the sentence is upheld.  I don't believe people should have to wait.  Violent criminals (rapist, murderers, arsonist and so on) should be killed.  All others should perform community service.  The community service should be expanded and training/education should be offered while the criminal is being reformed as well as rehabilitation if needed.  There should be a sort of basic training for criminals followed by labor where it is needed.

It makes more sense to reform those who are non-violent then to put them in a place where they are forced to become violent sometimes just to survive.

It makes no sense to assume that someone willing to kill for pleasure or profit will be reformed by a prison.  They will just endeavor not to be caught a second time.

An apology is worthless.  2 or 3 years of labor and education could turn a thug into a productive and responsible member of society. The "thugs" should be put to work rebuilding and cleaning the distressed parts of our cities.
