Question:

Is the MLB ever going to do anything about the thick bases?

I just saw a runner stepped awkwardly onto second base and it made me wonder about something. I've seen a lot of injuries caused by the thickness of the first, second, and third bases. Basically, they're too high, (at least an inch and a half or probably two inches) and I thought why don't the MLB make them shorter to avoid any chances of injuries?

  1. Possibly because on  a close play the runner might slide past the base and be tagged-out.  That would even apply to first base on a pick-off play for example.

I wonder how the MLB players, themselves, feel about your question.

  2. Sliding would be to difficult because they would have nothing to hang onto and would slide right over it.

  3. Yeah let's have flat bases so the players slide right over the bag and get tagged out. That would be great. That's like making players wear football pads because they might get hit by a pitch.

  4. Is this a serious question?  First of all, if a Major Leaguer is tripping over bases then he needs to go back to tee ball and learn how to run the bases with the kids.  The height of the bases also provides leverage for a runner continuing on to the next bases.  Runners push off the base as they make a turn.  You can't very well do that is the base wasn't raised.  First and Third base in particular need to be visible by umpires for fair/foul calls.  Finally, like so other answers say, you would have a lot of oversliding if you flatten the base.

  5. You've got to be kidding me.

  6. Do they really need to worry about thick bases?

  7. it would be like sliding in your backyard on those cheap bases that are made out of like paper
