Is the Mansfield reformatory (where Shawshank Redemption was filmed) open for public tours?

Yes! They have regular tours which you can take during the daytime. One is a Hollywood Tour, that takes you around the prison and pays particular attention to where scenes from Shawshank Redemption and Air Force One were filmed.

You can also go on the overnight ghost hunt, which begins at 8pm and ends at 6am. However, all of the ghost hunts for 2008 are booked, and they don't do them after thanksgiving. The overnight tours start back up again when the weather warms up around April. The ghost hunt tours are $50 and WELL WORTH IT! I just went on one on August 15th and it was AMAZING. Even if you aren't into the whole ghost thing, it's still alot of fun (and yes, definately creepy). I would 100% recommend you try and book a tour there, and if you want to do a ghost hunt, send in your forms and payments asap (they haven't posted dates for 2009 yet, but I suspect they will soon).

Yes it is.. They have them periodically throughout the year... I would contact the Mansfield city hall to put you in touch with the historical society... Or check out the SUNDAY Plain Dealers feature on the Shawshank Redemption reunion... I'm sure you could find some contact number/info in that article... I'd look it up for you but, I just recycled the newspaper!

Yeah, but, if you go, you should go on Halloween, just on principle alone.

Just keep in mind there's literally nothing else to do here, though, so don't travel very far or anything.  There's a g*y bar right nearby, but that's about it.
