Im in community college, bad GPA, no real drive for school right now, I'm not dumb got a 90 on the practice asvab and am looking at my options right now. I've been looking to the Marie reserves because I want a challenge and am tired of doing the same thing everyday. My parents are completely against it but I'm positive I'm going to join if I can finish this year and graduate with an associates. Idk all im asking is if you guys think the Marines is a good decision for a kid in my shoes or am I making the mistake of a lifetime as my parents say.

  1. College is not for everyone, and it may just not be for you right now.  I just joined the Marine Corps and leave for boot camp in October.  I had a similar situation to yours.  I went to NYU, had a high GPA but just wasn't into it.  Try to finish your associates this year, you can enlist now in the Delayed Enlistment Program, and ship to boot camp when you're done with school.  It'll be good because you'll have a chance to get in shape, learn  your orders and find the best job for you. You can also start as an E-2 pay grade instead of an E-1.  As for  your parents, mine weren't real thrilled either.  Explain to them why you want this so much (the adventure, pride, a chance to change your life for the better)... and you could send them info from the USMC site (they have dvds for parents, etc) for free.  Any how, best of luck, its a hard decision to make, but even making the decision to join will change you as a person.

  2. If i were you, I'd talk to every branch. They each have their own benefits. It's your life, do what you want. Don't let your parents influence your goals, man. Especially if they are to become something to be proud of. THAT could be the mistake of a lifetime.

  3. Do what you want. I would talk to the recruiters of all the different branches and see if any of them appeal to you.

  4. talk to the recruiters for sure.  it is something to be proud of.  my bro is a marine and every marine i know loves it (and hates it but know they are awesome)  if your not motivated to finish school do it, though i would stay with school as long as you can because in the long run its worth it.  My cousin dropped out of a 4 year school joined the army...sounds like u a kid who needs a little motivation and adventure.  my cousin has done well and we are very proud, but keep in mind he's done two years in iraq in only 6 years in the army the **** does get real and 2 years in the sandbox may make school seem like fun (beer girls and air conditioning all the time)

  5. practice asvab is alot easier than the real one, but that's beside the point, all you need is a 35 or 31 to enlist in most branches. if you already have enough college credits, you might be able to enter basic as an e-2. i know you can in the army, but i don't really have to bother with that in the marines. The marines is a great option for anyone that wants to discover who they really are. It definitely changes you, but in my opinion, for the better. You become more reliable, more punctual, puts you in the best shape of your life, and you become part of a brotherhood of guys that want to serve their country with their lives.

  6. You will be sent to the Middle East and die if you join the military. That doesn't mean you need to stay in school though either. You could take a year off and hitchhike around Europe or some such thing. I don't think that you choosing to die rather than continue school is such a good decision!

  7. I remember graduating from High School and going to college. I felt burned out, I wasn’t motivated to continue school so I decided to join the military. I asked around and all the older men, who had them selves served in the Army and Navy told me was to join the Air Force. If you WANT to be a Marine then join the Marine Corps. Understand that everyone else in your pay grade in every other branch will NOT have to work as hard as you do or experience the pain and suffering or pride you will encounter. All E-1’s get paid the same. If you seek the mantle of being called a Marine then join the Marines, they offer nothing more then any other branch of the military other then cool commercials to join the Marines. I am and American Airman. I have served for 10+ years and am respectful of all my brothers and sisters in arms that have served and those that have fallen. Join the Air Force and you Won’t regret it.
