Is the Mona Lisa really worth all the fame?

I'm not saying it's a bad painting.

I went to see it while i was in Paris, it was a great but what does it make it different from other beautiful painting by other famous artist? Do you think that all the publicity, seeing posters everywhere, tends to take away the "value, the uniqueness" of the painting?

  1. I think it a well-painte picture but there are surely better pictures out there that are far more interesting.

  2. I've never seen the Mona Lisa in real life, but I imagine it to look just like the way it's been represented in so many books, magazines, posters, t-shirts, gift cards, etc......

Although the Mona Lisa is not "beautiful" to many, it is arguably the most famous artwork in the world. I don't think it is Leonardo da Vinci's best painting, but it is interesting. Some say it is a self portrait and her enigmatic smile has engaged many viewers for hundreds of years.

I don't think all of the publicity takes away from the work. Like most artwork, it's a personal appreciation. Some people will be excited to see the Mona Lisa in person and some will come away a bit disappointed.

If I ever make it to the Louvre, there are other paintings that I would stop off at before seeing the Mona Lisa.

  3. no!  its not!  the Louvre is filled with so many more beautiful paintings than the Mona Lisa.  I really don't get what the big deal is :)  perhaps if she didn't have such an enigmatic smile and we knew the story behind it then it wouldn't be so famous?

  4. it's famous  because her weird smile her eyes seem to follow you she's mysterious she had eye brows untill it started to go away as time past some other artist had to do some touch up word too her hands are folded at a perfect positions tha back ground is wierd too if you notice there is 2 semi circle things next to her elbows almost it was probly another part of the painting but it probaly got cut off

  5. Hi! I agree with you. When a painting gets so much publicity, it sort of takes away from it's uniqueness, making it not so special. I think if it was just shown in the museum, instead of, well, everywhere, it would be a lot more special.
