The N6 is the primary road connecting Dublin and Galway. I am thinking about driving it soon, but I neither know what the speed limit is, nor what sort of road it is.

  1. To go Dublin to Galway, you'd go on the M4 motorway first, then the N6, though parts of it are being upgraded to motorway too.

Here's all you ever needed to know about the N6:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N6_road

Speed limits - 120km/h for motorways, 100 km/h for National Routes.

Don't expect to get those sort of speeds consistently.

  2. The N6 does not connect Dublin & Galway. It connects Kinnegad and Galway.

To get from Dublin to Kinnegad you take the N4/M4 (Dublin to Sligo route). To get to Galway, you leave the M4 at Kinnegad and join the N6

N4 is dual carraigway from Heuston Station in Dublin to just past Lucan. It then becomes the M4 and is Motorway to Kinnegad, with a Toll-booth at Enfield costing Eur2.60

From Kinnegad to Galway the road is a combination of single and dual carraigeway. There may also be a bit of motorway which was recently opened, but I'm not sure.

Speed limits are 120KPH on motorway 100 KPH on dual carraigeways, 80 KPH or 100KPH on single carraigeways and 50KPH or 60 KPH in towns.

  3. The Dublin Galway road is the N4, there is a motorway just past Lucan the M4.

It is a dual lane road all the way, it is actually a good road to drive as there has been major improvements recently, however there is a toll just past Enfield, think its €2.50 for a car.

Speed on motorway is 120km ph, on N4, its 80km ph
