Is the NFL lockout causing trouble with the law for players? (Part 6)
This is the sixth part of a series of articles discussing legal troubles that players have had since the National Football League (NFL) imposed a lockout on its players and that the arrests and citations could have been avoided had there been no
lockout.
This was not the first incident in which Talib had trouble with the law. He settled with a taxi driver out of court after Talib allegedly assaulted him in August of 2009. He was charged with resisting arrest and simple battery, receiving a suspension for
the first game of the 2010 season. Before that, Talib had a fight with teammate Cory Boyd at the NFL Rookie Symposium in July of 2008. Shortly after, he had a fight with teammate Donald Penn and accidently hit another teammate, Torrie Cox, in the face with
his helmet.
Talib has been with the Bucs since he was drafted by them in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft, overall pick number 20 and was named the Defensive Back of the Year by the NFL Alumni Association in 2010. In his rookie season, Talib started in two of the
15 games that he played in and recorded 23 tackles, 17 of which were solo, along with nine deflected passes and four interceptions returned for a total of 32 yards.
In his second season, 2009, he played in 15 games and started in all of them, recording 64 total tackles, only eight of which were assisted. He also deflected 15 passes and had five interceptions that he returned for a total of 99 yards. Three of the interceptions
were in a Week 4 game against the Washington Redskins, the first three interception game of his career.
In 2010, he started in 11 of the 11 games that he played in, missing five games due to a tendon injury that he sustained in a game against the Atlanta Falcons. Even so, he recorded 40 total tackles, only one of which was assisted, as well as 11 pass deflections
and six interceptions that were returned for a total of 91 yards and one touchdown. Had Talib played in all 16 games of the season, he would have had the best season of his career.
Next on our list is Louis Murphy, wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders, who was pulled over by police on 3 April, 2011 for playing music too loudly. The Gainesville, Florida police officer tried to stop the vehicle that Murphy was driving, a Cadillac Escalade
SUV, for playing music too loudly. Instead of stopping, Murphy drove the vehicle into a parking lot, where he and the other passengers in the vehicle started to walk away.
Officer Thomas Harrison then ordered the party to stop and asked for identification, which Murphy refused to provide. When he was being placed in handcuffs, Murphy fought back and it took three police officers to put him in handcuffs and get him into the
patrol car.
