Is the NFL lockout causing trouble with the law for players? (Part 7)
This is the seventh part of a series of articles discussing legal troubles that players have had since the National Football League (NFL) imposed a lockout on its players and that the arrests and citations could have been avoided had there been no
lockout.
Afterwards, police searched his car and found a "non-labelled prescription bottle containing 11 individual pills later identified as Viagra," according to the police report. Murphy was not able to provide a prescription for the drugs and told officers that
he peeled off the label "because he did not want his girlfriend to know he had a prescription for it."
After being drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, overall pick number 124, out of the University of Florida, Murphy started in nine of the 16 games that he played in during his rookie year. He recorded 34 receptions for
521 yards and four touchdowns during that season. He also rushed six times for 31 yards. In 2010, his second year with the Raiders, Murphy started in nine of the 14 games that he played in and recorded 41 receptions for 609 yards and two touchdowns. He also
ran once for 43 yards and fumbled twice, losing one of them.
Mike Vrabel, outside linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, is the next person on the list of players arrested since the lockout after he was charged with theft at a casino in Indiana in March of 2011. According to reports, Vrabel was charged with the Class
D felony after he stole eight bottles of beer at a deli in Belterra Casino and was released after posting bond of $600.
Vrabel just finished his 14th season in the NFL, his second with the Chiefs. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft, overall pick number 91, out of Ohio State University. He did not have any starts in
the four seasons he was with them but played in 51 games, in which he recorded seven sacks.
He was then traded to the New England Patriots before the start of the 2001 season and went on to play for eight seasons with the team, starting most of the games that he played in. Out of the 125 games that Vrabel played in, he started in 109 of them. His
best season with the Pats came in 2005 when he recorded 108 total tackles, 73 of which were sold, along with three passes deflected and two interceptions returned for 23 yards and one touchdown. He also forced one fumble.
Vrabel was then traded to the Kansas City Chiefs and has started in all of the games that he has played with them, 30 for 30. In those games, he has recorded a total of 100 tackles, 73 of which were solo, along with two sacks, six passes deflected and three
forced fumbles.
