Is the North Sea rough in the summer?

We're planning a cruise in the July timeframe, one option is to cross the North Sea from the UK to Oslo. However, my wife is prone to getting motion sick. I know the North Sea can be very rough in the winter, how is it in the summer?

  1. maybe maybe not

  2. Yes.

I travelled back from Copenhagen in August during a Force 10 gale.

All the cabins were evacuated and we had to lie in the stairwells in the middle of the boat (the bit with least 'roll')

    It was very scary.

  3. It can be very stormy at any time of the year.

  4. Years ago when I was in the Royal Navy,  I was on an aircraft carrier in the North Sea during the summer. A storm came along and the swells were higher than the flight deck!  Most of the time though, the sea was fairly calm especially close to land  where you will be most of the time if going on a cruise to Scandanavia.

  5. We did a Baltic cruise last May from Dover to St Peteersburg, Oslo, Denmark, Sweden, etc. and it was very calm most of the trip.  The only problem was winds in Dover when we returned 14 days later and we had to dock in Harwich rather than Dover.  But the ship did not rock and pitch at all, it was a rather smooth ride.  WE were on the Celebrity ship, Constellation which is rather large and I am sure has the latest stabilization technology that all newer cruise ships now have.  WE did not have to take any measures because of winds or seas
