Is the Olympic Gold Medal 24K Gold?

I know it has some jade attach to it, but the medal itself is it 24k ?

  1. I think it's just gold plated, that would be a pricey medal!  


  2. The Gold Medal was solid gold up until the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.  After that time, Gold Medals have been merely gold-plated.  The exterior is covered with pure gold, but the interior is not.

    I'm not 100% sure, but if my memory is correct, the interior of the Gold Medal is (or used to be) made of silver.  

  3. It's a coating of 24-carat gold. A gold medal is actually the same as a silver medal, except it has a coating of at least 6 grams of 24-carat gold on top of the silver.
