If this is the case, why is there going to be one in Vancouver 2010 and we are having one now Beijing 2008?

  1. The original modern Olympic games began with a Summer games in 1896 in Athens.  In 1924 the first Winter Olympic games occured.  From 1924-1992 both the Summer and Winter games happened in the same year.  In 1986 the IOC (International Olympic Committee) voted to change the Olympic scheduel so the Games would no longer occur on the same year.  To adjust the schedule an "extra" Winter Games were held in 1994.  The winter games of 1992 were held in Albertville, France.  Lilihammer, Norway hosted the 1994 Olympic Winter Games.  Since then the Winter Olympics have happened every 4 years.  1994 (Lilihammer), 1998 (Nagano), 2002 (Salt Lake City), 2006 (Turino/Turin), 2010 (Vancouver).  The Summer Games schedule did not change 1992 (Barcelona, Spain), 1996 (Atlanta), 2000 (Sydney), 2004 (Athens), 2008 (Beijing), 2012 (London).  So, yes the Olympics happen every 4 years.  However, the summer games and winter games are separated by 2 years because of an IOC vote.  So, while the 2008 Games are in Beijing they are the summer games (obviously).  2010 are the Winter Games, in Vancouver, British Columbia.  The 2012 Games are again Summer Games and will be held in London.  The 2014 Winter games will be held in Sochi, Russia.  The 2016 Summer Games have not been awarded yet but 4 cities have been shortlisted (Chicago, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro and Madrid).  The Summer Olympics are by far the larger of the two.  I much prefer the new system, this way I don't have to wait too long to enjoy the peak's of athletic achievement whether it be in Winter or Summer sports.

  2. the summer olympics are in 2012 BUT the next WINTER olympics is in vancouver in 2010

  3. Those are the winter olympics.

  4. The seasonal Olympics occur every 4 years.  So that means, in 4 years, in 2012, there will be another Summer Olympics.  But every two years, there is an Olympics.  It alternates between Summer and Winter Olympics.

  5. The summer Olympics are every four years. Same with the winter Olympics. So the Vancouver 2010 are winter Olympics.

  6. Because there is a Summer/Winter Olympics the Winter ones are 2 years after every Summer one.The Summer one happens every multiple of 4 e.g. 2008 2012

  7. this year is the olympics.. in to ten its the winter olympics

  8. Umm I think its a little one? In 4 years I hope its in Chicago cause I really want to go!

  9. the olympics happen only every four years and those happening in 2010 are winter games or commonwealth or winter olympics as well

  10. I always thought it was every 4 years. They were talking about 2010 and I COMPLETELY forgot about the Turin Olympics (don't watch the winter ones...I live in a humid climate so don't understand and they make me sad...I want snow, lol)

But that 4 and 2 thing comfused the h**l out of me

  11. Because in Vancouver 2010 it is the Winter Olympics (Skiing, Snowboarding, etc)
