  1. Yes, and it is utterly magnificent!

  2. No it was moved, it used to be next to the iefel tower

  3. oh yes it is... this gives you an idea how big, it takes a full year to wash all the windows. then start all over again. ugh what a job...

  4. Yes, but it was damaged during the World Wars.  Money for its extensive restoration was generously given  mostly from Americans (the same with Monet's house in Giverny).

  5. Yes it is the original. As Rachelle said, Louis XIII is the one who first had something built here  - -a hunting lodge.  Louis XIV - le Roi du Soleil -- first visited Versailles at age 13, and he would develop some very big plans for this place!  Most of the immense amount of construction here was during his reign.

After Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette were  booted out of here in 1789 ( and then in 1793 guillotined),  a lot of the furniture was auctioned off. But later they have got some of the things back.   So some of the furniture there really is the exact pieces from the ancien régime kings .

My mother was disgusted by the whole thing, she called it obscene for anyone to have that much. And she is right. But it is very interesting to see. and the gardens are lovely.

  6. As far as I know - yes.

France has never had its cultural landmarks destroyed in any of the world wars, so apart from a certain amount of restauration, the palace is still the one that was built by Louis the XVI (I think it was 16th - the sun king.. but don't quote me  on that - I may be wrong ;)

  7. The very first "Versailles" as a hunting lodge built by Louis XIII with mansard roofs and brick and stone decoration. It was Louis XIV who surrounded the original chateau with Baroque additions and stretched its length to approximately 2000 feet.

The "original" Versailles, although modified, can be seen in the Marble Court, which is the main entrance to the palace. It is the heart of the present palace as Louis XIV did not wish to remove the work of his father.

  8. Oui. The Palace of Versailles was the official residence of the Kings of France from 1682 until 1790. It was originally a hunting lodge, built in 1624, by Louis XIII. It  was expanded by Louis XIV beginning in 1669. He used it as a little lodge as a secret refuge for his amorous trysts with the lovely Louise de la Valliere and built a fairy tale park around it. Versailles became the superb Baroque palace known to the world as a symbol of civilization and pleasure. Although the palace was stripped of most of it's furnishings during the French Revolution, the building is pretty much intact and well maintained. Versailles is now a national museum.

  9. yes, pretty cool huh?
