I asked this question: 1)Because a co-worker asked me, and I wasn't sure and 2) Because I wanted to know.

My question for you, Coasty, why are you getting so belligerent about the question? It was a simple question, no offense intended. I wasn't bashing the President...so why the attitude?

  1. Not in the United States.  Indeed, there are several examples of Presidential children going to war: FDR's 4 sons all fought in World War 2, and Lincoln's son Robert was (briefly) a member of Gen. Grant's staff in the Civil War.

  2. I would like to ask why you would ask this question?

Do you know that the USA has an all volunteer military?

Do you know that the official military policy is that females are not supposed to be in line units? It is not always followed except for infantry and armor units.

If you are aware that the children of the current president: 1 have not volunteered, 2 are female and are not sent to combat units.

Are you aware that FDR's son was a Marine Raider for all of WWII?

So to answer your question NO they are not exempt from going to war!

  3. No.  We have a volunteer military.

  4. No!

  5. Not strictly as such but due to money and influence, if they are thrown the right way, a President can keep his kids out of harm's way. In the case of Bush's kids, they are both girls, so they wouldn't be put into combat roles anyway, which would lessen(though not completely obliterate) their chances of being harmed.

  6. No.

  7. No.  If they join the military they go wherever they're assigned.
