I received something in the mail a couple of days ago, saying I could win $500,000. I just need to look for a thing in the mail that will arrive soon and send it in to them. Said I could win addition cash prizes and a new car. Is this a scam or legit? I am from Canada, the leaderhead said Reader's Digest, had an Quebec address on it.

  1. it is legit

  2. Yes it is legitimate. But please remember that the odds of winning are very small, as it is in all lotteries. Also, you do not have to buy any product in order to enter such a contest. (Federal Law mandates that.) Readrrs Digest's Canadian head office in located in Westmount Quebec. Most contests (but not this one), avoid Quebec, (i.e. residents) because they levy a special tax on companies that hold contests. The province is perpetually teetering on the edge of bankruptcy because they have one of the largest civil servent per capita rates of any place on Earth. (the same size as California but with one quarter the population.) There is  one benefit arising from this. There is a government department that oversees contests and any questions that arise therefrom. So if you have a  problem, you have somewhere to go to file a complaint.

To summarise, Reader's Digest is a good corporation, the contest is legitimate but your chances are slim.

    Good luck.

  3. It's just another scam. Happens to me all the time.. the only way you can "win" something is if you purchase something they offer, like a subscription to a magazine or books.. Even then, the chances of winning are super slim.. I would just ignore it.. it's too bad they use so many trees for that c**p..

  4. If they don't ask you to send them money then it's probably legit.

  5. To the best of my knowledge they are legit; but, they send you endless papers to fill out and stickers to stick and options to buy and on and on it goes.  Then just when you'll give up they sweeten the pot.  Yet apparently it is legit and people do win.

They have been around so long, that surely we would have heard of a scandal by now if it were not real.
