  1. Scarborough has a large ethnic population, and that leads many people to say it's "unsafe." I lived (albeit briefly until moving to downtown TO) out by Centennial College in Scarborough, and had no problems with the area. It's nickname is "Scarabia" because of the large middle eastern population. Tends to make some of us whiteys uncomfortable. Scarborough does have a reputation of being crime-ridden, but from my personal experiences of living there for a couple of months and frequently visiting friends out there, it's just that: reputation. I don't find it any worse than other parts of Toronto. But it's not as affluent as downtown Toronto.

As for how far it is to Central Toronto, it can be a fair distance to commute. I used to take the bus to the Scarborough RT to the Bloor subway line, and it would take me a good half-hour or more to get to Bloor station. When I moved downtown, the convenience was more than worth the extra cost of rent. Of course, that might be different if you drive. But I wouldn't drive in Toronto if you paid me; the TTC is FAR more convenient for getting around. Parking is an expensive nightmare, and traffic. Oh, the traffic.

Best resource site would be the TTC. (www.ttc.ca) It'll help you figure out how to get around. I also use 680news.com, which is a local radio station that gives weather and news information and links to other Toronto area websites.

    Hope this helps! :)

  2. Yes Scarborough is as safe as any other place in Toronto.

Lived in Scarborough 40 years and its fine !  Also to correct another answer,

Jane Street and Finch Avenue is NOT in Scarborough, that is in North York.  Also, everywhere in Toronto has a lot of different ethnicities !Scarborough is actually a great place to live, lots of free parking at malls, several great movie theatres, parks, bike trails, marina...

The official website for Toronto, is a great and informative website without tons of advertising like other websites

    www.toronto.ca

On that website you can find information, city resources, contacts, and even photos, and Toronto maps  where you can measure distances from one point to another.  Downtown is about 15 - 20 km from Scarborough, depending which part of Scarborough to what point in downtown, or about 20 minutes by subway.

  3. Toronto is a big city, so you're bound to find your occasional crimes here. A few years ago, there was a murder that took place right across the street from where I live. That was the first time anything happened in my area in nearly 10 years. I think Jane and Finch area of Scarborough is most notorious for it's crimes. I believe Scarborough IS the centre of Toronto, supposedly it's the heart of the city.

  4. Nowhere in Toronto is safe. Look into Newmarket. Their average murder per year is less than one.

  5. There is nowhere in T.O.that I would say is safe Toronto has gone to h**l in A HAND BASKET

  6. Of course Scarborough is safe.  Its a big place, with more than half a million people in it.  Of course there is going to be some crime.

Now don't be silly, you don't want to hang around big apartment complexes buying drugs or creating ****.  Then of course you're going to get your fair share.

  7. pretty much
