Is the Social Contract still in effect?

Is the Social Contract still in effect or has government become two powerful to be called to task by the citizenry? Does the power still lie in the hands of the people to decide if it should exist, or will it exist at their expense regardless of their opinions? In the modern world is revolution a possibility or an ideal?

  1. I think the answer to this lies in conditioning.

I did not write this, except for a few editing liberties.  You may have seen it before in email:

Know how to catch wild pigs?  All it takes is patience.

You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come every day to eat the free corn.

Once they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side. When they get used to that section of fence, you put up another side of the fence.  They get used to that and start to eat again.

You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up.  You put a gate in the last side.

The pigs, who are used to the free corn and no longer feel threatened by the fence, now willingly come through the gate to eat.

    Close the gate.

Some of the wild pigs will realize they have lost their freedom and begin to run round and round inside the fence.  But it's too late and soon they settle down and go back to eating the free corn.

They are so conditioned now, they have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves. Besides, there is safety inside that fence and the corn is free.

At this point, there's no longer a need to even close the gate.

Add on:  Wanted to give you this quote but had to look it up first:    "A little revolution now and then is a good thing. God forbid this nation should go twenty years without one."   --Thomas Jefferson

  2. In name only. There is no chance that the people can call a government to task anymore. Which is what makes the NRA and it's followers a laughable bunch when they think an assault rifle and shotgun will help them defend themselves against a hostile government.

No one in America is even interested in putting this into force because they are afraid of it seeming like a revolution (too communist) or unpatriotic. Fools indeed.
