I lookin to see if this camera has XLR hook ups to it. All the pictures i see of it are the same. I see areas on the camera that look like panels that can open up and im wondering if the hook ups are in there or what..

  1. Nikolai is correct on ALL points... but if you want only 1 wireless lav...

The wireless lav units by Sennheiser

    and Sony (pro division)

    http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-audio/c...

use 1/8" connectors and are more portable because the base stations use battery power - and do not require AC power like the Shure or other wireless lavs.

Audio Technica makes some wireless lavs with 1/8" connectors, too - but they low-end usints are not full diversity

which can make them susceptible to interference.

UHF and full diversity are best.

    UHF is next best.

    VHF is OK.

Anything else should not be on your list - high chance of interference.

The downside is you need to split the camera's stereo connector without the luxury of an XLR adapter...

I can't recommend anything from Nady or Samson.

  2. The Sony HVR-HD1000U does not have pro XLR connections; instead, it has a 1/8" mini-stereo audio input. However, you could purchase an XLR adapter, like those made by Beachtek, which would allow you to connect pro XLR mics. Be careful though, make sure to determine if your mic is phantom powered, meaning it uses the camera's battery, or individually battery powered. If it is battery powered, you could get the cheaper adapter that goes for $180.

    like this one:

However, many XLR mics are phantom powered, so if that's the case, you'll need to get the fancier adapters.

There are cheaper options, like a simple mini to XLR cable (XLR female to mini-male), which can be as low as $20. However, I have two concerns over these cables:

    (1) I have heard they degrade audio quality. I have used them in the past, and found them decent

    (2) The cables are quite heavy. So, when plugged into the camcorder's flimsy mini-jack, it could put pressure on the mini-jack and potentiall damage it. You can work past this by securing the cable to the camcorder with a velcro tie, relieving the pressure from the mini-jack.

.......they are also NOT phantom powered, so watch out for that.

OR, you could purchase a digital audio recorder with XLR terminals, which have phantom power; they're probably a bit less expensive than the phantom powered beachtek adapters. However, you'll need to sync the audio and video in post production if the audio is recorded separately. Or you could get a digital audio recorder with mini-stereo inputs, and get a hard wired lav mic and just have your subject hold the recorder; that's sort of wireless, but kinda a strange way to do it. The mini-jack recorders can be pretty cheap too.

Hope that helps, and best of luck to you!!!
