This question has probably been asked before, but is the statue really in NJ?

Take a look: http://www.aboutnewjersey.com/images/regions/hudson/LSP/mapSml.gif

As you can see, it's on the New Jersey side of the river.

So is it in New York City or New Jersey?

  1. Statue of Liberty in Liberty Island and Ellis Island is on New York Harbor.

  2. It's on Liberty Island in NEW YORK harbor

  3. The Statue of Liberty may be located in New Jersey or it may be located in New York (which I don't think it is).  But it "belongs" to the People of the United States of America.

  4. Both states have claimed ownership of the island.  Mapquest shows the same thing as your link does.  I think that the dispute is considered ongoing, but not really a huge deal in the scheme of things.
