Is the Statue of Liberty sculptured after a real person?

I have always wondered who the Statue of Liberty was?

I dont know who the model was but i am sure that the artist would have used a model from life to capture the gesture and proportions. There is no substitute, not even really years of practice for actually drawing or sculpting from a live model, to see the muscles, angles, tensions, proportions etc.

I believe that the sculptor used his mother as a model.
