Is the Truman Doctrine still in effect and if so, does it obligate the US to defend Georgia?

  1. The Truman Doctrine never obligated the US to do anything. It was merely a statement of intent by Truman that the US would support Greece and Turkey both economically and militarily to prevent them falling under "outside control". (While he was obviously talking about the USSR, he never actually mentioned it by name at all)

    While it also included a fuzzy sort of "feel good" statement about other "free peoples who are resisting subjugation...", that also never carried any obligation with it - and could be interpreted just as easily as that we should support South Ossetia against Georgia as to support Georgia against Russia.

  3. No the Bush Doctrine is currently in effect, and I don't know how that applies to Georgia. Although in a few months his doctrine will no longer be binding either. It may be followed by the next President, but they may start their own Doctrine.
