  1. Extracurricular activities are easy to pad and hard to verify.  Therefore, colleges don't rely on them nearly as much as people think.  Beyond grades and test scores, the admissions essay is the most important factor.

As for the US becoming overpopulated -- the answer is Yes -- the whole world is getting overpopulated, and if we don't do something about it we are doomed.

  2. It's only top colleges that care. The competition for the top 20 schools is not just from the US but from all over the world. These schools get so many applications from qualified candidates they need a way to differentiate them so activities become important.

  3. Colleges are looking for students with a sense of purpose, and contributing somehow to the betterment of society is one of the criteria.  The US is in general not overpopulated--I'm wondering why you think there is a connection.  Your community service hours is just one way to evaluate applicants.  BTW, your grammatical error is going to keep you out of a good school more than fewer community hours.

I agree with Ranto that mostly the "top" schools take community service into account--they are more looking for how you express yourself and how you came by your accomplishments, more than a specific number of hours.  That said, if they require a certain number of hours, do not lie about it.  Students have been dropped from schools for lying on their applications.
