Question:

Is the UK as bad as the newspapers say it is?

I don't live in the UK but I do like to keep up with on-line newspapers from different countries and I see nothing but doom and gloom when looking at British newspaper sites.

I started reading the Daily Mail site, but after a few weeks it appears clear to me that a lot of the articles are greatly sensationalized to a point where readers could not fail to spot that, yet these newspapers are so popular.

So is the UK as bad as it is reported or should I just stick with the good old (supposedly unbiased) BBC news site?

  1. Stick with the BBC and treat the Daily Mail as the threepenny dreadful it is.

  2. from experience the daily mail tends to over exagerate any situation and is right wing so will try to make gordan brown and the labour party seem incapable. i live in london and its not actually as bad as everyone makes out.

the bbc tend to be balanced

  3. The Daily Mail along with the other tabloids are absolute rubbish, as you've noticed.

Unfortunately the BBC is increasingly biased, and a propaganda organ for the Government-this was neatly illustrated when its Director was fired for allowing a reporter to say that the document that justified, and led to War with Iraq was considered to be "sexed up" by certain inside sources-so he was fired for allowing the truth to be told.

    I wouldn't recommend it.

I think the best, least biased, news source is "The Independent",this newspaper is, as its name suggests, pretty independent, it has writers from accross the political spectrum, from arch conservative to socialist, and is read by people of varied political opinion.

The Daily Mail was not a good introduction to what life is like in the UK, it presents a world where we should all be frightened of anything different.

  4. No, of course it isn't as bad as reported. British newspapers have been peddling doom and gloom practically since the printing press was invented.

The Daily Mail, Express, Mirror, Sun, and Star are comics and should not be taken seriously. Even the broadsheets can be a bit much at times.

The BBC site is far less sensationalist than any print publication, yet it has its own subtle biases. Don't rely on any one source for news, consult a range of sources.
