Is the UK finally back in the fold when it comes to great sporting nations!?

The Beijing Olympics have been great for the UK and just in the nick of time considering that we will be hosting the 2012 games.

We are just about holding onto third position, based on the amount of golds that we have won. Chris Hoy has won three gold medals himself at these Olympic games and I have just learned that in the overall standing for all of the countries of the world, Great Britain is ranked as third in the overall medal haul of the modern Olympic games, behind the USSR and the USA.

PS: I think that Chris Hoy should have shared the spot light as have Phelps and Bolt as he has won three gold medals in this Olympic games alone!

  1. Lets hope the complacent years have finally come to and end and we now realise that although we think we are the greatest, in fact we are not.  Sincere congrats to Team GB.  Now lets get at the cricket, football, golf and what have and be GB again.

  2. Talking about modern games the USSR changed its name to Russia about 19 years ago.

  3. Not as many as the top UK Gold haul of 57 from the London 1908 Olympics. Mind you, one third of the competitors were British.

A fantastic achievement from Team GB, who have not relied on the inherent British Superiority so evident in the film "Chariots of Fire", where dastardly foreigners who cheat by training for the event, were derided.

    Yes, we're back!

But we could have done without the potty-mouth of some of the winners in the interviews afterwards.

  4. check out wikipedia for all sports

but in athletics, i would have to say we've had one of our poorest olympics ever, with our joint second worst medal tally in olympic history.
