Question:

Is the UN a nonprofit?

Is the UN technically a nonprofit? Someone said it was but I can't find any supporting information. Wikipedia just says it's an "international organization" and to me it seems more like a political body, so it can't be a nonprofit in terms of the way we normally think of it. Can someone help clarify? Thanks!

  1. Well they have a really c**p budget thats what I know.

  2. The UN is a non-profit organisation whose budget are collected from its members. As far as i can remember, US contributes the most to UN, then Japan, then Germany.

  3. The term non-profit is usually applied to a CAPITALIST organization which raises money to do some charitable or educational work, is not in business to make money.

    Examples of non-profit organizations:

    * Private schools

    * The Red Cross

    * Boy Scouts

    Government organizations are not in existence to make a profit or not make a profit, they are in existence to serve some needs of their people.

    The USA is neither a profit or a non-profit organization, ditto Canada, Britain, France, any nation you might name, or any international associations they are in such as EU NATO UN NAFTA etc. or any branches of the govenments such as the CIA, Metropolitan Police, Interpol, Border Guards, etc.

    Various religious organizations like the Catholic Church, may sponsor some non-profit charities, but the Church, the group of people who worship God a oarticular way, they are not a profit or non-profit organization, although they may have some kind of non-profit status with a particular government, for the purposes of blocking taxation.

  4. You are never going to hear the UN referred to as a non-profit organisation, as that is usually used to describe charities. You are correct in saying it is referred to as an "international organisation".

    The UN receives its funding from member nations. How much they pay is suppose to be a % of their GDP, which then effects the quota of people that can work within the UN. That is rich countries pay more than poor countries and have greater representation. The USA contributes the most, however they actually contribute a lower % of GDP.

    "Technically" the UN is non-profit in that they do not receive profit from the services they deliver (ie: they don't sell their services). However, it has been known for the UN to deliver services in return for other non-financial rewards. So I leave it up to you to decide if that is profit.
