  1. I don't really mind, to be honest.  what's the point in getting worried.  What are you going to do...kill 160 million people?

  2. It's too high, but the only way to convince people to go elsewhere is to make elsewhere more prosperous.  If there are a lot of jobs in the Sudan, for example, people from Sudan and the surrounding regions will go there.  The other key is to promote stable governments and trade.

Recently they started talking about building a hugh solar energy array in the Sahara Desert.  That will provide some short term jobs, but with a little thought, it would provide a lot of permanent jobs.    If they add a desalination plant and a pipeline to provide water to the area and build the array 12 feet off the ground so housing, water lines, and gardens could be added underneath it, you could make the Sahara bloom AND become a new nation.

  3. No way this is sparse compared to some places!

  4. The population is too high due mainly to the flood of immigrants who come to Britain for the benefits and lifestyle and then breed uncontrollably. Was OK in 1950's at around 50 -55 million. I say stop all immigration unless country needs that type of worker. Try going to Canada, USA or Australia without a job and they won't let you in.

  5. The population size we had in the 1960s.

  6. Our population density is well below that of Japan - and it doesn't seem to have done them any harm.  It is about half that of the Netherlands - they seem to be thriving on it.

The population density of Guernsey and Jersey is about double that of Great Britain - they're not in the third world yet.

A lot depends how the population are going to be productive.  If we were an agricultural nation, we're running out of space.  If we were an industrialised nation, we could easily double our population.  As it is, we are trying to become the world's bankers.  Our population density is about double that of Switzerland - but they're full of lakes and mountains, and about a fiftieth that of Monaco.

  7. The UK population density is still much less than that of the Maldives (you know - the "get away from it all" holiday destination).
